Johanna Samuel was born in London, and now lives in Carmarthenshire, Wales. She began writing as a young child, and at age sixteen her original story “Bees in the Night” won Second County Prize. “The Legless Wellie” serves as the prelude to her Bumble and Grumpkin series titled “Double Time”.
Johanna is fascinated by the concept of time. Her sci-fi series pictures a world where there are two forms of present time coexisting in the same physical space — each as invisible to the other as tomorrow is to today. Her characters unwittingly cross between these time zones to find they are strangers in their own home, and cast adrift in a whole other world where they don’t belong.
Johanna’s writing is peppered with humour, inspired by the pranks of her childhood. In her own words: “Rousing my father by chucking a glass of water over him as he slept did not, as l expected, result in us leaving early to go on the outing he had promised. And dressing our miniature dachshund in baby clothes, placing him in a pram, and pushing him down the street also led to a surprise outcome. Anticipating a pretty baby, two passing ladies smiled as they paused to peer inside. But after processing the unlikely image, and clearly having no sense of humour at all, they stifled gasps of dismay, raised wide eyes to the horizon, then promptly made off as if a ghost was behind them."
