About the Author

Hi everyone, I'm Johanna Samuel - the author of the Bumble and Grumpkin books!

Now here's a little bit about me...

I was born in England, but since then I've moved from place to place more times than I can count. Having arrived in South Wales at the end of 2006, and with this being my second Welsh move, I now consider myself very lucky indeed to live in this totally stunning part of the Carmarthenshire countryside!

It was while I was still living in Swansea that I first realised that the Bumble and Grumpkin story would have to be set in Wales. This was because the characters in my head were all clamouring to spill out into the local Welsh countryside where they felt most at home. Here was where they longed to lead their lives independently of me, and so persuasive were they in their demands, that in the end I had no choice but to let them go. But unbeknown to them, I had a secret plan... I was going to spy on their adventures, and then take their story to the world!

As the first of these adventures (The Legless Wellie) unfolded before me, I found it pretty easy to observe the action and then describe what I saw. In fact, this strategy worked so well that I assumed I'd soon be writing a succession of short stories featuring the same two characters, Bumble and Grumpkin - in so doing, launching my career! I was actually so convinced of this, that when Book One was completed I just sat back to watch and wait for the next adventure to start. And so I watched and I waited, and I waited and I watched... but the more time passed, the clearer it became that absolutely nothing was happening.

What on earth could be wrong?

One day whilst visiting the Lliw Reservoir, the answer came to me quite unexpectedly. Knowing as I did that I am a writer capable of averagely good plot lines, and that averagely good plot lines rarely sell many books, I had for some time been praying for genius. So on that day as I was standing by the waterside, in a single instant I was suddenly aware of the almost touchable reality of an alternate present time - invisible to  me, yet happening right here, right now, in the very place where I stood...

I had discovered Inter Time!

So that was it. I was not to write short stories at all, but rather a single story about Inter Time, told through the lives of my characters over the course of multiple books. Now that this lightning strike of genius had galvanised my brain, I finally knew what to do. I watched carefully as Bumble and Grumpkin's whole world turned green...

And then I wrote The Half-eth of May.
